John Bergers Another Way of Telling Essay example -- essays research

In John Berger’s exposition â€Å"Another Way of Telling,† Berger contends that photos contain a â€Å"third meaning.† Berger claims that the third importance is close to home and depends totally on the individual watcher. Thus, no photo can pass on a similar message to any two individuals and no two photos can pass on a similar message to any one individual. Here, the legitimacy of Berger’s presumption disintegrates. All photos convey one essential fact of the matter.      Berger states, â€Å"All subjectivity is treated as private† (100). However, guaranteeing that anything abstract inside a photo, its past and future, is close to home just backings an unadulterated fact of the matter. Reality, be that as it may, is past the viewer’s cognizant translation and the photo gets equivocal. Berger becomes delude when he thinks about an individual’s assessment of the past or eventual fate of a photo to the real truth of the photo, in this way surfaces â€Å"ambiguity.† Even Berger concurs that uncertainty is the aftereffect of the viewer’s individual encounters and brain science, yet he overlooks what the watcher can't see. Clearly, in the event that one places their own, invented implications unt...

Characteristics of Slavery as a Business - 275 Words

Characteristics of Slavery as a Business (Research Paper Sample) Content: CHARACTERISTICS OF SLAVERY AS A BUSINESSName:Institution:Characteristics of Slavery as a BusinessSlavery in Africa has not just existed all around the continent for a long time, but it still proceeds to operate in the present day. Systems of servitude and also slavery were regular in most parts of that given continent since they held a significant part of the antiquated world. In most African social communities where servitude was predominant, the enslaved individuals were not treated as property slaves but were given rights in the system like contracted servitude elsewhere in the globe. When the Arab slave exchange and Atlantic slave exchange started, a big number of African systems developed some changes and started supplying captives for slave markets to the other parts of the world. The slavery in Africa gained momentum during Atlantic slave trade when almost three continents were involved. Slaves were shipped to America to the huge farms and also plantations (Pyb us, 2005).Slavery in chronicled Africa was conducted in various forms, and some of these don not certainly fit the meanings of slavery at any other place in the World. Obligation slavery, enslavement of war captives, military slavery, and criminal servitude were all conducted in different parts of Africa. Despite the fact that there had been a few trans-Saharan commercial activities from the interior of Sub-Saharan Africa to different areas, slavery had shared a small part in the economic life of many societies in Africa until the beginning of transcontinental slave trade (Arab and Atlantic). Slave practices were again changed with European colonization of Africa and the formal abolition of the slave trade in the early nineteenth century.Brief overview of slave life within colonial AmericaIt is worth noting that at the very beginning of the known American Revolution, 20 percent of the population in the thirteen provinces was of African descent. The authorized practice of enslaving b lacks happened in every colony, but the budgetary substances of the southern states propagated the establishment of the legitimized institution in Massachusetts in 1641. Throughout the Revolutionary period, more than 50% of all African Americans existed in Virginia and Maryland. Most blacks existed in the Chesapeake province. The dominant part of the African Americans was slaves. Indeed, the first official United States Census taken in 1790 demonstrated that eight percent of the dark majority was free. If free or enslaved, blacks in the Chesapeake secured familial connections, systems for dispersing data, survival methods, and different forms of resistance towards their situation. The larger part of blacks living in the Chesapeake dealt with tobacco plantations and huge farms. Since the growth of tobacco was amazingly labor concentrated, African slave labor was utilized. Tobacco plantation equaled the sugar production of the British West Indies. Tobacco was a ten month crop. Plantati on started in late January with the arrangement of the fields for planting, repairing devices and laying out the seed beds. Tobacco seedlings were transplanted to the fields especially in March. By midsummer, tobacco was growing in the farms, but the sensitive plant obliged steady care. At harvest time, tobacco was assembled and shipped to England. For slaves operating on farms, the fact stemmed out as being more monotonous than tobacco cultivation. The assortment of food crops and animals kept slaves occupied throughout the year. Regardless of the very difficult work, there were some minor favorable circumstances to working on a plantation to compare to working in a urban setting or family unit. Slaves on estates existed in complete family units, their work managed by the rising and setting of the sun, but they had Sundays off. It is worth noting that, any form of weakness was stark. Plantation slaves were more inclined to be sold or moved to other parts than those in a provincial setting. They were also subject to merciless and extreme punishments since they were viewed as less significant than family unit or urban slaves (Thomas, 2012).A form of resistance practiced by the enslavedSlave resistance officially started in British North America especially when the first slaves landed in the Chesapeake in the seventeenth century. As one researcher has put it, slaves regularly opposed their enslavement only because slavery was essentially unnatural. Forms shifted, but the general demonstrations of resistance were an endeavor to suggest some measure of freedom against an organization that characterized individuals as property. The most widely recognized form of resistance could be those that occurred in plantations. Moreover, slavery was only constrained to work, and the slaves failed to comprehend the terms of their work. After a certain period, standard rights rose in most plantation areas. These traditions managed work schedules, conveyance of proportions, and also general guidelines of comportment. In case slave master expanded workloads, provided pitiful proportions, or introduced excessive punishments, slaves could resist by abating work, faking ailment, breaking machines, or undermining production. The enslaved frequently arranged the essential terms of their day by day schedules. Clearly, slave masters could benefit from these agreements as placated slaves worked harder, expanding output and productivity. An alternate regular form of slave resistance was robbery. Slaves appropriated products of the fruits, vegetables, domesticated animals, tobacco, alcohol, and cash from their masters. The robbery of foodstuffs was particularly regular and was advocated on some various grounds. In the first place, slave apportions were frequently inadequate in line with providing food and calories that were pertinent in supporting the general efforts of pl...

The Theories of Crime - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1295 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Law Essay Type Analytical essay Level High school Topics: Crime Essay Feminist Essay Did you like this example? Theories of Crime 2.Feminist Criminology/Law:The criminal defence of Battered Woman Syndrome is founded on gendered stereotypes of helpless women. Discuss. Domestic violence and the result of continuous domestic violence against women is a multifaceted issue. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Theories of Crime" essay for you Create order Despite the obvious physical injuries that victims sustain, victims of domestic violence also suffer psychological issues that can vary considerably from minor anxiety and stress to debilitating mental illness. On occasion, victims retaliate due to the violence sustained. Criminal courts are now recognising a plausible excuse of this retaliation to domestic violence as the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"Battered Woman Syndromeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢. (NRC, 2014) However, this is also a controversial topic as courts including the lawyers, judges and jurors will have preconceived notions of women and gender stereotypes and the presentation of testimony towards battered women. In this essay I aim to define the Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS), the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"helpless womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ and how BWS is founded on the stereotypes of women. BWS was initially identified by psychologist, Lenore Walker as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a set of distinct psychological and behavioural symptoms that resulted from prolonged exposure to situations of intimate partner violenceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (Walker 1984). Walker (1984) states that the emotional condition and mindset of a battered woman who has succumb to the cycle of prolonged partner violence is one of absolute helplessness. Furthermore, Walker (1984) states that the cycle of violence is often determined by the level and intensity of the violence. This cycle is therefore categorised in to three separate stages and are depicted below as: Stage 1 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Tension Building (Verbal and emotional abuse) Stage 2 Acute Battering Incident (Physical violence and heightened sense of fear for the victim) Stage 3 Loving Contrition (Abuser would attempt to convince victim of their intention to change) (Craven 2003) BWS is a manifestation of learned helplessness which derives itself from the perception of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"helpless womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢. Learned helplessness assists in explaining the battered personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s perceptions of the situation and why they do not flee from the abuser. The à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"helpless womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ syndrome was an adapted theory by Walker from Martin Seligmanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s theory of learned helplessness. Seligman used the theory to help explain how mental illness and subsequent vulnerability to inmate violence were associated with depression, low self esteem and helplessness. Walker (1984) utilised the base of this theory to explain how battered women also suffered similar mental conditions as a result of their battery. (Craven 2003) Seligman conducted a laboratory experiment on dogs which were continually shocked. Once given the ability to flee the torment the animals were unable to physically escape the painful situation. This helped Seligman argue that when sufferers of domestic violence are given the ability to escape it is apparent they develop distorted perceptions of their ability to alter their position. Seligman then drew the link between the behaviour of the dogs and some side effects of depression which is a condition caused by BWS. (Craven 2003) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Battering, like electric shocks, would, over-time, diminish a womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s motivation to respond and produce the same kinds of cognitive, behavioural and motivational responses. In other words, a woman who remained in a violent relationship was more likely to exhibit signs of learned helplessness that one who had never been in, or had escaped a violent relationshipà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (WALKER 1984) BWS has been implemented in Criminal Court in the past 25 years and is being seen by more and more as a plausible excuse for grievous retaliations of violence of women against their abusing partner. However, this is not without its share of criticism and scepticism by some. (Schneider 2002) Elizabeth Schneider helped explain the use of BWS in the courtroom. Elizabeth believed that for a defence solicitor to utilise the defence of BWS for a client in a criminal courtroom, first they would have to overcome sex-based stereotypes. The lawyer will have to understand enough about the experiences suffered by their client to consider whether her actions are reasonable and in a way that is sensitive to the problems of gender bias. (Schneider 2002) The Australian (Western) legal system has been developed around a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"male norm in mindà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ (Schneider 2002) Because generic stereotypes of battered women continue through all levels of the legal system (Judges, Lawyers and Jury), Lawyers need to be critical about their own trains of through and seek assistance by experts to help recognise gender bias in the law. (Schneider 2002) Magistrates, Judges and prosecutors should do the same. They MUST be aware of the misconceptions of women who have suffered at the hands of domestic violence and must stay neutral at trials to provide a fair outcome. (Schneider 2002) For BWS to be successfully utilised in the court s, defence lawyers must express the following information History of violence against the abused woman Her efforts to protect herself in the past The mental impact of violence on her The context in which the violence occurred (Schneider 2002) Even with an understanding of BWS and its gradual acceptance in the criminal courtroom, as previously mentioned it does have its share of criticism. Schneider states that many testimonies provided by sufferers of BWS reinforce the, sometimes dated, attitude that courts have displayed towards women. Further to this other problems that BWS encounters as a plausible form of defence include: (Schneider 2002) The issue of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"intention to killà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ as opposed to a direct threat on a womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s life. Male gendered double standards of reasonableness. Testimonies provided by expert witnesses do not have to be accepted by the courts Unfair bias due to financial situation. (Rich women can afford the best psychologists to provide expert opinion and poor women cannot) Generic stereotyping of women who have suffered at the hands of domestic violence. (Schneider 2002) Gender stereotype is the foundation for BWS as it can reinforce the stereotypical gender roles and the view of women as emotional and irrational victims. With the inclusion of BWS to more and more trials, expert testimony has become an excuse for the crimes committed rather than justification. This has incited many critics of BWS believing that it reinforces gender bias stereotypes and women were excused of their conduct due to irrationality. The initial innocent concept of BWS and its use to help women explain the experiences of a battered woman and her actions of self defence has started to lose credibility as it gets abused and molestered in criminal court by defence. (Wimberly 2014) In conclusion, courts and the people associated with the legal system/profession; need to be aware of gender stereotypes with women as they can influence the outcome of a trial due to preconceived notions. Experts and psychologists should be given the ability to provide expert evidence on the psyche of the victim to gain an insight into the battered womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mindset, yet in the same notion not providing excuses for the defence. BWS is an excepted notion and provides a form of standardisation for battered women to justify violent actions, however, does not provide a blanketing excuse. The complex notion of BWS and the helpless woman (learned helplessness) is far from perfect and does come with its own issues and plausible defences negating its relevance. In this essay I have discussed and explained BWS, discussed and explained à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"the helpless womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ learned helplessness and have explained how BWS is founded on the gender stereotype of women. Brittain goes on a tour in Italy in 1921 to find her brother’s gra vesite. She recounts the pain she feels due to the loss of her brother, fiancà © and many if her friends. As she walks through the rows of graves on an Italian plateau, Brittain describes the peaceful life her brother lived before the war. His life was calm and safe in an uneventful town in England, but he ended up dying in an extremely bloody war in the country sides of Italy. Brittain finds her brother’s grave and is overcome with sadness, she wishes to stay at her brother’s side so she does not have to return to her trivial life as a survivor. She states that at least there with her brother, there is a sense of peace and dignity that the survivors do not have now. After the war, the people who survived were left without fathers or husbands and there were very few people able to return to the work force. Within both excerpts, the pain felt from war is showcased in a more personal way. It is not about the demographics of the loss but how the war truly impacted the li ves of people. The book teaches the reader about handling people, to making them like you, and to swaying people to your thinking. Handed to me some years ago by a well-meaning adult, I thumbed through the book rather dubiously, nonetheless eager to get from it what I can. We will write a custom essay sample on Smiling These Days or any similar topic only for you Order Now Dale Carnegie’s self-help book changed my life, in that it realized more than its promise of winning me friends and influencing people – the book allowed me to see, quite clearly, that people nowadays are not so open to your smiles and your and your interpersonal maneuvering, no matter how sincere and well-meaning you may be. Subliminal messages of kindness and camaraderie don’t go too well with people these days, compared to the in-text testimonials of people from fifty years before. To paraphrase a popular saying, the road to good intentions is paved with practiced smiles and the inevitable ire you’ll raise with all those smiles. Do not offend, says the book, be sincere about this. For example, the book encourages the reader to, well, smile, and do it with your heart and the purest of your intentions shining through. Take that saleslady for example: at the end of both your days, you give her a smile, and she forgets herself and scowls at you, perhaps thinking that you are another demanding customer, before she puts up the trained facade of fake cheerfulness and asks you, â€Å"What can I do for you, ma’am? † You attempt to finagle the cooperation of a colleague by underscoring his achievements, and then glossing over your own. Most ambitious individuals think of your praise as their right, and nod their acknowledgement, and move on, uninfluenced. It seems that any act of kindness will be misconstrued as one with dubious intentions. It becomes more apparent than ever before how cynical, jaded and world-weary human beings have become, until you smile at their direction for no apparent reason, with no agenda in mind. You are immediately treated with speculation and doubt, that with one smile, people see a wealth of malevolent planning and less-than-decent intentions behind it. And you can’t blame your skeptical audience. Practice the tenets of the book all you want, but then, you still end up following dictates regarding how to treat people better, mostly because you want something from them – be it friendship, agreement, respect or obedience. Ironically, in our desire to reach out to people with no malice, we do so motivated by our needs and demands from them. Basically, How to Win Friends and Influence People is the benevolent person’s guide to taking over the world, in his own way. And maybe therein lies the basic flaw in my character, and in all the other people I know who say that this book has â€Å"failed† them too, that perhaps I am not well-meaning enough for this, not considerate, not kind enough. And maybe, I, too, am far too cynical to believe that this book could actually work. But then the book can teach you to transcend this, as it claims to be a guide to making friends, to ensuring harmonious relationships between strangers, colleagues, friends and family. It enumerates and elaborates techniques and devices, from that sincere smile, to appreciation and praise, to downplaying your own merits in order to encourage the productivity of others – it is a self-help book about proper interaction with your fellow man. And perhaps that is the book’s ultimate failure, allowing us to see how cynical and jaded this world has become: that we actually need a self-help book to teach us how to be decent human beings. My Favorite Place Essay Example For Students

My Favorite Place Essay Its amazing how one telephone conversation will forever be imprinted in my memory as the most rewarding conversation I have ever had. I still recall every little sigh and syllable that was uttered. I can still feel the urgency of how important it was that I get in touch with my father, three weeks prior he had been diagnose with severe lung cancer and started intense chemotherapy immediately. Hi dad, how are you feeling? I asked. A little better now. I was sitting here watching the History channel and was actually able to keep some Lasagna down, it was the best Lasagna that I have ever had. These of course were the best words I have ever heard. Due to the Chemo he was unable to keep food down, we ended our phone conversation with I love you and talk to you soon. One week later he passed away. My father was a very loving, caring, and a truly amazing man. He raised all five, of us kids. Even though four of us were his step- children. He treated us like we were his biological children. He worked for thirty-five years driving a forklift. Which he truly loved his work. His favorite hobby was taking care of his land and his horses. This land is where he is laid to rest. This is my favorite place. As I move thru the gateway of the first pasture I see the huge barn with its few corrals for the horses to the East. It has a pear tree with an abundance of fruit on it. Then as I glimpse to the west of me I see the smaller familiar barn with its speckled rusted coffee colored roof. On the side of the barn there is an extremely wide poultry pen. A few feet straight in front I see the ever present solid, secure, and strong fence with barb wire leading to the second pasture. I open the gate and proceed thru it following the dirt path that has been worn in the ground from being traveled upon so much. After entering the second pasture I begin my journey by foot across lush, green grass. All around me I take in the breathtaking landscape of the many different types of intense, dark, sweet smelling flowers. The abundance of trees and plants amazes me more every time I see them. As I move toward the incredibly old, wobbly bridge that covers the babbling stream. I come to a stand still in the middle of the bridge. As I listen intently to the water rushing by with its current so swift. Just listening to the sounds makes my anxiety melt away. I continue on my long journey. Hiking up the humongous, unreasonably rough and earthy hill I notice the many different birds that are so happily whistling their songs. I feel the warm breeze and sun hitting the back of my neck. Instantly it makes me think of my fathers warm embrace and smile. I pause and take in the tranquil sounds and sights nature can only provide. Nature is truly a beautiful and remarkable sight. Each and every one of the trees is exceptional and vivacious with color and life. I persist again on my journey on foot once more down an earthly trail that has been worn out thru the grass. I move about toward the opening to the clearing. There are pine trees as far as the eye can see. Some seem to be so tall that as I gaze up they are reaching to the heavens above. In the distance there is another fenced in area blocked off for cattle and horses to graze. It seems so long ago when it was in fact being used. I continue my quest eventually in the distance I see the four familiarly large oak trees. The trunks of the trees by themselves are actually quite massive. The trees have got to be at least two hundred years old. .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .postImageUrl , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:hover , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:visited , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:active { border:0!important; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:active , .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u16f064b611c6da52e71d9451cdeff98f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: racial targeting EssayThey have sustained the four seasons many times. The weather damage is apparent from the limb structure and the bark condition. A couple of the trees have even been struck by lightning. The Oak trees are broadening so widely. They are fashioned in the most puzzling form of a circle. Their branches extend upward like they are demanding to lay their hands on the sky. Their leaves are vivacious with life. You can tell by the richness of the green in the colors of their leaves. I make my way thru the dense, tall grass and proceed to the center of the trees. Each one is now located around me at its focal points of North, South, East, and West. As I acquire a seat at this point I stare around at the beauty of my surroundings. Its peacefulness and beauty astounds me. I also use my sense of smell to discover the sweetest aroma of honeysuckles. Truthfully, my greatest, most adorned fragrances. At the same time as I swiftly stare in the direction of the breathtaking light blue sky I notice the sun so vibrantly shining above me. It feels so wonderful. There are ways of watching nature that can make you feel safe, secure, and tranquil. At this point I am flooded by memories of my father. His wit, charm, sense of humor and love rush upon me leaving me breathless. This was his most favorite place to be. When I am here it makes me feel some what closer to him. It makes me feel to a greater extend nearer to my father. His presence is to a great extent felt. This is his final resting place in his journey of life. It makes me sense that I am so stressed free and relaxed. I am extremely fortunate to have this amazing place. I am next to ease and this point and like my father I am at peace.

Education In France Essay Paper Example For Students

Education In France Essay Paper The education system in France: (source: European Union)I. Information on Community Law II. Information concerning the national education system III. Useful addresses I. Information on Community LawThe fundamental principle of non-discrimination on grounds of nationality between students studying in a foreign country and national students applies as regards admission to an educational or training establishment. This includes enrolment fee requirements and the conditions governing the award of a grant to cover such fees. In this respect, any Community citizen must be treated in the same way as national citizens. One example of the kind of problem which young people studying another country may encounter would be special requirements on admission, the need to pass tests or supply documentary evidence, or other such conditions which are not required of nationals, and which have no objective justification. Each Member States law provides for financial assistance for students in higher education. Some countries laws may make it possible for a grant to be transferred where a student decides to study in another country. In other words, the student may continue to receive financial aid from his/her country of origin while studying in another Member State. Students covered by the Erasmus chapter of the Socrates programme are treated more favourably than students who have changed countries outside the Community scheme or under an inter-university agreement. It goes without saying that such students are still covered by the principle of equal treatment in terms of admission conditions, with exemption from the requirement to pay any enrolment fee. In addition, though, they continue to receive grants or other forms of financial assistance from their country of origin, regardless of the general rules or any obstacles in the country in question concerning the transferability of grants. As regards recognition of periods of training completed in an establishment in another country, the Community legislation governing the programme requires that this be provided for in the form of agreements between the university of origin and the host university. Such recognition is not necessarily guaranteed where study periods or training periods are not wi thin the scope of the Socrates/Erasmus programme. The conditions set out in a. above constitute a minimum set of rights which apply to all students who do not enjoy a broader status under Community law. For instance, where a student is classified as a worker or as a child of a Community worker, the principle of equal treatment applies to other aspects of academic life as well, i.e. enrolment and maintenance grants, general academic benefits, and any other measure designed to facilitate the students education. II. Information concerning the national education systemCompulsory education: primary and lower secondary educationStructure and durationSchool attendance is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16, and the requirement covers both primary school (ecole elementaire) and lower secondary school (college). Generally, pupils leaving the college (4 years) are 15 years of age; therefore they must still attend school full-time for at least one more year to satisfy the compulsory schooling requirement. Normally, they do so in a general and technological lycee or a vocational lycee. Primary education lasts five years from the age of 6 to the age of 11. It includes five classes divided into two cycles: the basic learning cycle which begins already in the upper section of nursery school (ecole maternelle) and continues in the first two years of primary school; and the consolidation cycle which covers the final three years before admission to the college. Lower secondary education lasts four years 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd classes for pupils from the age of 11 to 15. It is divided into three cycles: the 6th class is the cycle of adaptation; the 5th and the 4th classes are the central cycle; and the 3rd is the specialisation cycle. School YearThe school year normally starts at the beginning of September and lasts for 36 weeks. AccessEntry requirementsAttendance at primary school is compulsory for all children from the age of 6. As a rule, parents are required to enrol their children in the school area in which they live, but exceptions are possible. All pupils who have completed the consolidation cycle of primary school are admitted to college at the latest when they are 12 years old. Tuition feesAll compulsory schooling is provided free of charge. The cost of books and other teaching materials is often borne by the municipality in the case of primary schools and by the county councils (Conseils generaux) in the case of colleges. LanguagesThe teaching of a foreign language in the last two years of the consolidation cycle of primary school has been introduced in certain schools on an experimental basis since 1989. Since 1995, teachers may, on a voluntary basis, give short, daily introductory classes in a foreign language to primary pupils (last year of basic learning cycle and first year of consolidation cycle). At college, the study of a first foreign language is compulsory from the 6th class, and the study of a second foreign or regional language is possible (compulsory as from September 1998) from the 4th class. Promotion1. Primary education:Each child has a report book (livret scolaire) which informs parents of the proposal of the Teachers Council of the cycle attended concerning the childs promotion to a higher class or cycle and the final decision taken. According to the pupils performance promotion can be delayed or advanced. 2. College:Marks are noted in a report which is sent to parents. Only in the 4th and 3rd classes are pupils results noted in a school report book and are taken into account for the award of the national certificate. Certification1. Primary education:Children who complete normal school attendance or have difficulties that are not covered by special education are promoted automatically from primary school to the first year of secondary school. There is no final examination and each pupil has the right to be admitted in the 6th class of college. Land Of Desire Persuasive EssayNumerus clausus: no numerus clausus rules are applied by French universities, except the medical faculties. In other subjects, students are admitted according to the institutions capacity. However, students have to pass the two-year degree (DEUG or DEUST) to be admitted to continue for further degrees. Grandes ecoles always apply the numerus clausus rule. Languages: to enter university, EU citizens must pass a language test to prove their oral and written knowledge of French. Some categories are excluded from this requirement. They are: citizens of countries where French is the official language; German students holding the Allgemeine Hochschulreife (general certificate of aptitude for higher education); students holding the French-German Baccalaureat; students holding the DALF (diplome approfondi de langue francaise). Students applying to grandes ecoles have to pass an entry examination and must therefore know French already. Tuition feesUniversity tuition fees for courses leading to national degrees are fixed each year by a decree of the Minister responsible for higher education. Foreign students from an EU Member State, with the exception of Erasmus students, must pay these fees, unless they are receiving a grant from the Ministry responsible for higher education. The same applies to all public higher-education establishments. Public and private ecole superieure fees are higher and vary. Academic recognition1.Recognition of certificate of aptitude for higher education:The holders of a foreign secondary school or higher education certificate wishing to study in France should apply to the establishment of their choice: decisions concerning the recognition of diplomas are taken by the head of the establishment in question. A full or partial academic waiver may be granted by an education committee, which takes its decision on a case-by-case basis. Some courses, however, have different entry requirements (medicine, pharmacy, paramedical training, architecture, agronomy, music, dance, plastic arts, etc.)2.Recognition of final qualifications:Information on the recognition of higher education qualifications awarded by other EU countries can be obtained at NARIC centres. Final qualificationsAt university level, intermediate and final qualifications are as follows: first cycle: DEUG (diplome detudes universitaires generales) or DEUST (diplome detudes universitaires scientifiques et technologiques), lasting two years (Baccalaureat +2); second cycle: basic and professional education leading to the degree of Licence (DEUG+1) and Maitrise (Licence+1); professional education leading to a technical Maitrise (DEUG+2); three-year study course leading to an engineering degree (Maitrise+1); study courses at IUP (university institutes of vocational education) and IUFM (university institutes for teacher training); third cycle: professional education leading to a certificate of advanced specialised studies (diplome detudes superieures specialisees DESS, Maitrise+1) or research training leading to an advanced studies certificate (diplome detudes approfondies DEA). The DEA can be followed by the Doctorat. All public and private institutions and grandes ecoles prov ide a final certificate in their field of specialisation. Financial assistanceGrants: two types of scholarship are available for both French and European citizens: those awarded on social criteria and those awarded to third-cycle students on the basis of academic and social criteria. Social grants are awarded taking account of family income and outgoings and, in some cases, students incomes. They apply to students who are under the age of 26 when they submit their first application and who wish to study for a national or other approved degree on a full-time basis. Students in the first or second cycles, students studying engineering, medicine or pharmacy, and students studying for a teaching qualification lose their entitlement to a grant if they have to repeat part of their course. Eligibility: scholarships are awarded on the basis either of family income and attendance at full-time courses or of students performance. Students must be enrolled in the first or second cycle, in technical higher education sections or in preparatory classes for grandes ecoles. They have to be under 26 if starting studies and promoted to the next class if already receiving a grant. University scholarships are awarded by the universities for third-cycle study courses (DESS, DEA and Doctorat). EU citizens are eligible for such aid in accordance with the Community rules explained in Section I.1 above. III. Useful addressesPrimary and secondary educationThe town hall (Mairie) in each municipality in France has an education department which is responsible for registering pupils in primary and pre-primary (nursery) schools. It also provides parents with the addresses of the regional and district education offices which have all the necessary information on entry to secondary education establishments (first and second cycle). With regard to pre-university education, parents should first contact the town hall of their municipality. Higher educationWith regard to higher education, foreign students with the necessary diplomas should apply to the establishment of their choice. The regional education offices can supply details of establishments in the region in which the students will be living. Leading International Sporting Featuring †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Leading International Sporting Featuring? Answer: Introduction: Olympic Games are leading international sporting events featuring competitions in diverse sports amongst athletes from over 200 nations. The event is conducted every 4 years with summer and winter games being coordinated two years apart. Participating in Olympic Games is considered as the most important milestone of an athletes career. Winter Olympic 2014 was conducted in the city of Sochi in Russia from 7th till 23rd of February. This was the first time that Olympics was hosted in Russia after the Soviet union break up in 1991. A total of 98 events spanning across the discipline of 15 winter sports were executed. Till today, it is considered as the most expensive Olympic ever organized with a budget of $51bn. This essay will throw light upon the various stages of the event from its planning to growth and finally staging. Formation of the event: Bidding Sochi was selected as the host city by a bidding process where South Korea and Australia were first and second runner ups. After a lengthy process of various investigations, IOC makes the final decision on which city is best suited to host the games (Forbes, 2016). Planning committee Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007. Post which the government formed the Sochi Organizing Committee to oversee the planning and execution of the event. One of the most important tasks of the organizing committee is to ensure that every competition is held as per the rules of International Sports Federation. They need to make sure that before the event all the necessary and required installations have been in place and the athletes are provided all required amenities to play. Players participate in the games from different parts of the globe and hence lodging, transportation and medical assistance services are provided to them and their entourage. And lastly, drafting and submitting a report in two languages for public distribution within two years of the completion of the game (Olympic, 2017). Olympic Park Olympic park was built for the first time in the history of Olympic Games to conduct the event. State of the art facility started construction in 2007 and most venues were completed by 2013. City Temperature Average February temperature of 8 degrees made Sochi the warmest city to host winter games. Hence even more efforts were put in to ensure the games take place in the most appropriate circumstances. Growing stage of the event: Budgeting A few years down the line, there were tremendous changes in budget. Original budget was kept at $12bn but it later increased to $50bn dollars (Business Insider, 2014). This made Sochi Winter Olympics, the most expensive in the history of Olympic Games. Invitations One year before the event, in a ceremony, President Rogge personally invited athletes. All invitations were sent by post from the IOC headquarters. Individual countries had already started registering and finalizing their players for representation at the games. Cultural Celebrations Olympic game ceremony is marked by various cultural events where the host country gets a chance to showcase their cultural richness to the rest of the world. Best performers were chosen from different parts of the country after a strenuous selecting procedure by a committee. Opening ceremony was a lavish event organized at a grand scale with immense participation from the countrymen (YouTube, 2014) Marketing and Advertising Marketing of the event starts at least five years before the event. The emblem was unveiled in Dec 2009. The official Slogan Hot. Cool. Yours. Was finalized in 2012. And the official mascots polar bear, snow hare and a snow leopard were selected by a public vote in 2011 (CNN News, 2017). Sponsors Every event needs investors and sponsors who are willing to spend money on the event. Growing stage of the event requires getting these sponsors on board by providing them with a platform to advertise their products. Committee formed decides the kind of marketing different sponsors receive at the event. Coca-Cola, Omega, Panasonic, PG among others were the biggest sponsors of the event (Sponsorship, 2014) Telecommunication Security Telecommunication Security was also taken into extensive consideration as Russias FSB ensured that no communication between spectators or competitors goes unmonitored (The Guardian, 2013). Power infrastructure Russia is among the biggest energy super powers of the world. Since winning the bid in 2007, Russia built 49 major energy projects and increased the Sochi energy generating capacity by 800% (National Geographic, 2014). Transportation In an attempt to modernization of transportation before Sochi games, government built more than 360km of road, 321km of railroad tracks and 22 tunnels (Olympic News, 2014). Russian President Vladimir Putin sent off the Olympic flame. Post which, torch bearers relay across 65000km, covering 83 regions of Russia in a span of 123 days. This sets off as the journey of Olympic Games and is the longest relay in the history of Olympics (Bleach Report, 2014). Opening ceremony was witnessed by over 40000 spectators. The entire ceremony showcased the beauty of Russian music to the rest of the world. For the ceremony alone, 37000 police officers were recruited to ensure the safe execution of the event (CNN, 2014). 88 nations participated in the grand pomp and show of the event. Figure skating, Skiing, Luge, Curling, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Cross Country skiing, slope style skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, speed skating among others were the sports hosted at the event Russia, United States and Norway were the three countries with the highest number of medals. Russia bagged 33 medals, USA 28 medals and Norway 26 medals. Of the countries that won medals, Slovakia, Croatia and Kazakhstan stood last and received one medal each (ESPN, 2014). For the sustainability of the event as a stakeholder, attention must be paid to how the facilities built specifically for the purpose of the event can be used once the event is over. A lot of money is spent on building the infrastructure and it must be ensured that they are effectively utilized after the event. Currently the Sochi Olympic Park is in preparation to host FIFA 2018 next year. The original budget for the entire event was a mere $12bn which was exceeded to a preposterous $50bn. This goes on to show that either there is a lack of planning by the initial budget committee or there are a number of unexpected expenses. Either of which is a fault which must be avoided for a sustainable event. It is difficult to calculate the exact budget for such a big event but this high level of difference is sure to raise questions as a stakeholder. Venue Selection There are lot of controversies around the city of Sochi as many Circassia organizations objected on games being held on the lands of their ancestors despite the fact that Circassians were vanquished in the Russian-Circassian war of 1864. They were removed from the country in a genocide and conducting the event of such a large stature on their land was considered insensitive.
